Master the Skills of Effective Fire Service Course Design and Instruction

Fire Service Course Design is a 45-hour self-paced online course designed to prepare current and aspiring fire service personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively design, develop, organize, and evaluate fire service training programs. Based on the Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 10th Edition (IFSTA), this course focuses on the principles of instructional design, curriculum development, lesson planning, training schedules, student evaluation, and program improvement necessary to support successful fire service education. This course is designed to help students move beyond instructional delivery and into the planning process required to develop professional, organized, and measurable fire service training. Students will learn how to create instructional objectives, organize lesson content, prepare training outlines, select instructional methods, and develop both written and practical evaluation tools that support student success and operational readiness. Emphasis is placed on designing training that is effective, organized, legally defensible, and aligned with departmental goals, professional standards, and firefighter competency requirements. Students will explore methods for evaluating training effectiveness, documenting student performance, and improving instructional programs through analysis and feedback. The course emphasizes instructor professionalism, course organization, educational planning, testing and evaluation methods, and continuous program improvement that influence successful fire service education. Upon successful completion, students will possess the foundational skills necessary to design structured fire service training programs suitable for classroom, practical, and blended learning environments while supporting firefighter development and organizational training objectives.
